How Iboga can Support Personal Change and Lasting Transformation

So, let me first just start by stating this is my own experience and what I have witnessed. There are no guarantees. All research facts on ibogaine will be down below…

When you arrive to Iboga,

you come with your whole life: your history, experiences, pain, memories, beliefs, choices, and patterns. In so many ways, these things have shaped you and impacted who you have become.

Then one day, you wake up and realize you cannot keep living a certain way.

Maybe you have tried to change. Maybe you really want to. But there have been decades of patterns—ways of thinking, coping, reacting, protecting yourself, and moving through life—that have embedded themselves into your whole being. You can feel chained, stuck, unfulfilled, confused… the list can go on.

Well, this is where Iboga comes in and supports real change.

First and foremost, when you meet the medicine, you first need a detox—mentally, physically, spiritually. From all the memories, old moments, ugly or random thoughts, harmful habits, junk in the body, and everything else we have collected along the way.

I often will speak about how our own minds are like a computer: collecting/storing information just like a hard drive or habits/patterns such as programs on a computer. Over time, many of these programs begin running automatically. We may not even realize they are there anymore. This is where Iboga comes in: the goal is to bring you back to your original self. Think of it as a factory reset.

But first, you have to see all the programs you have been locked into in your brain. Ya’ know how your mind can become such a toxic environment that you would never want someone you love to live in it? Yeah… you have to face that.

Actually, Iboga can bring you to the point of being sick and tired of treating yourself like shit. It can show you how you have wired your own mind to operate—where you have been abandoning yourself, repeating pain, or accepting things that are past your expiration date.

Beyond the mind, it can also go into every cell of your body and clean it up. This detox can happen in a few different ways: sweating, shivering, feeling hot or cold, purging, peeing often, or releasing emotions from the body. These are some of the common ways Iboga can help you eliminate toxins/emotions.

Iboga is known as the truth medicine:

It is a R E V E A L E R.

It will increase your ability to see yourself. Your awareness gets heightened to a whole new level. Maybe what you thought was your issue is not actually the problem…
& you cannot change what you cannot see.

This is what we often mean when we say Iboga “shows you the truth”—the truth about yourself, your life, your choices, and the patterns you have been repeating.

In the Bwiti tradition, truth is foundational. They understand that when you live out of alignment of truth, you will live in misery. They base everything on truth and teach what truth is. They understand the power of K N O W I N G.

This in itself creates such an impact for people.

The Teachings:

When you receive an Iboga retreat with a Missoko Bwiti professional, you may experience what we call the Teachings.

Iboga shares teachings about life with people. It can feel like finally having the manual to the game you are playing. Everything changes.

You have more understanding. You can choose what you want, but now you understand more of how everything works.

I have watched how these teachings alone can support people in making profound changes in their lives. They begin to see life in a new light. Concepts and ideas become more rooted, and they begin to actually know it for themselves.

Integration:

Another way Iboga supports people is through what happens after the retreat.

It stays with you.

It also did this factory reset. Part of what gets reset is your tolerance for everything.

Now let me explain.

If you are someone who has been taking shit from people—and from yourself—well you actually build a tolerance for it. Over the years, you begin to become numb to it. In fact, you may not even notice it anymore.

This is where things get sticky…

Something that should feel painful you cannot even notice anymore. When someone cannot feel the pain then there is no consequence. These small pains are actually ways we learn from our mistakes. We are meant to feel them to redirect ourselves. People actually become addicted to their old familiar environment, habits, patterns of what they know.

Now, because you are reset, your tolerance is reset too. So, guess what? When you go back into life…

YOU WILL FEEL IT.

»This is my favorite part about the medicine« because I honestly see that as a gift. If you have been numb to your own pain for so long that you cannot feel it anymore, you may keep re-choosing it because it has become familiar. Iboga can create a pattern interrupt. It can make the old choices—the ones that harm you—feel exactly like what they are: misery.

Because the choices that are harmful for you become much harder to continue making without feeling the truth of them. This is especially true for people who are comfortable staying where they are, even when that comfort is costing them their life, joy, health, or self-respect.

Real TRANSFORMATION takes real change.

You can only grow by embracing discomfort. It is an essential piece. Not all discomfort is bad. Sometimes discomfort is the feeling of outgrowing what is familiar. Sometimes it is the feeling of choosing yourself for the first time.

And the best part is this: when you choose what is truly best for you, it can feel incredible.

No more being somewhere beautiful yet feeling completely empty inside.

No more accepting pain because it is familiar.

No more abandoning yourself.

Receiving Support

Integration is actually the most important part of this work.

The ceremony can open the door, show you what needs to be seen, and interrupt old patterns—but your life after ceremony is where the real changes become embodied.

That is why I recommend people work with someone during integration. It can be confronting to return home with new awareness, new sensitivity, and a lower tolerance for the things that once kept you stuck.

It is nice to have the support of a trained professional to explain, remind, and guide you in those moments.

Because the goal is not simply to have an experience.

The goal is to live differently afterward.

Now for the Research & Articles:

Most studies, research, and recorded trials are from Ibogaine.

How may ibogaine support change?

Ibogaine does not appear to work through one simple mechanism. Researchers describe it as pharmacologically complex because it interacts with several neurochemical systems involved in reward, stress, learning, mood, sensation, and substance dependence.

Areas of scientific interest include:

- Glutamate and NMDA signaling: These systems are involved in learning, memory, and the brain’s response to stress and repeated substance use.

- Dopamine and reward pathways: Ibogaine may influence reward circuitry that becomes dysregulated in addiction.

- Serotonin transport and signaling: These pathways may be relevant to mood, emotional regulation, and psychological processing.

- Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors: These receptors are involved in attention, arousal, and addiction-related processes.

- Opioid-related systems: Ibogaine is not a conventional opioid agonist, but it may influence adaptations produced by chronic opioid exposure.

- Neurotrophic signaling: Preclinical research has found changes involving glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, or GDNF, which is one reason ibogaine is often discussed in relation to neuroplasticity.[1][2][3]

In plain language, ibogaine may temporarily disrupt entrenched patterns in the brain and body—especially patterns related to craving, withdrawal, reward, avoidance, and stress. This does not mean it “rewires” a person permanently or guarantees healing. Lasting change usually depends on what happens before and after the experience: safety, therapeutic support, relationships, daily practice, environment, recovery care, and integration.
